Biography
Suzé was born in New England and grew up in the mountains of Oregon before returning to the East. She lived in Paris, France and resided in Portland, Maine for many years, close to the ocean and forest. She presently lives in Tucson, AZ. Always interested in art but encouraged to pursue nursing, she worked as a nurse until she decided it was time to follow her heart. At first she turned to fiber art then, while attending a fiber workshop at Haystack Mountain School of Crafts in Deer Isle, Maine, she was encouraged to pursue an art degree. She graduated with a BFA in photography and printmaking in 2005 from the University of Southern Maine. After college, she owned a portrait photography business but recently finished that chapter in life. What she missed was the solitary pleasure of night photography and long hours working in the darkroom and in her studio. She divides her time between photography, painting, and printmaking. Suzé uses a Hasselblad 503CM for film and Canon digital SLR's. Although her preference is to produce silver gelatin prints in the darkroom, she is also using digital printmaking during the hot summer months. Concerning her work, she explains, "recently I have been in an experimental stage, combining photographic prints with printmaking and oil paint. In turn, I found I loved the luscious quality of oil paint and enjoy the discipline creating small daily studies. My connection with the land and its elements, the transience of nature and simple daily life, offer an opportunity to interpret that bond with meditative and minimalistic imagery. For me, art is about creating a visual response to my environment and the small fragments of beauty I confront in its spaces." |
